First Blog: Where I'm going

There comes a time in all of our lives when we must ask ourselves three imperative questions:

1) Where am I now?

2) Where do I want to be?

3) How am I going to get there?

Looking around, what is it that I see?

  • Hundreds of cars
  • Pigeon limping around on their one remaining stubble of a limb
  • Advertisements
  • Children wanting
  • Adults desiring
  • Smiles and laughter
  • Families
  • Friends

My point is: where is my place within this noise?

The easy statement would be that I am a crew member at TJ’s, and a future marketer. I have been studying Marketing, its concepts and theories for over four years. However, where do I sit within this manipulation of sorts?

Marketing is so interesting, for in this field we strive to understand people, their wants and needs.

My personal marketing perspective lies within my ethical values as a human, the fact that we are all a small piece in this big picture, and we all matter. It is my goal as a marketer to be sure that I promote products and services that benefit the whole [Earth]. Every person and company holds the power to be sustainable. Companies need to acknowledge the facts: our world is shifting due to increased demands, abuse of natural resources, and the manipulation of the systems. The limits to our capabilities are only those that we ourselves create.

It is my goal to market products and services that are made sustainably, by companies that hold sustainable ethical beliefs, morals, and values. I strive to work for a company that will make me feel compassionate and proud to be a part of.

If our society could become less motivated by wants that pollute our earth as well as the minds within, then perhaps we could begin to see the possibilities of change. If we could take a step back and not concentrate on financial bottom lines and stockholder compensation, then perhaps we could acknowledge the wonderful good.

Now you know where I’m going. Where are you headed?

  1. You sound like you will become an successful and ethical marketers. I think you are right that we should always hold sustainable ethical beliefs, morals, and values and we should strive to work for a company that hold these values. Keep up the good work and stay true to what you belief.

  2. Isn't it so easy to say but so hard to do? I agree with you and think we should all do what we feel passionate about. I think everybody starts out this way and some follow through with what they say and believe and, unfortunately, some do not. We as people want to do the right thing and what's best for the whole but then you wonder why everyone doesn't follow through with it. I guess we as people sometimes get distracted or take the easy way out but sometimes all it takes is a little reminder to motivate us. So, good job on writing what you feel. Sometimes we just need to take a step back and think about what we believe. And, sharing our beliefs will undoubtedly have an effect on others too.

  3. I wish every marketing organization shared the same values that you express here. The only problem is that people get way to caught up in their own worlds. Values go out the door when money becomes involved. Many people are just getting by and any job, whether it be sustainable or not, makes an enticing offer. Our culture needs to shift from capitalist to sustainable capitalist in order for our whole society to share your view.

  4. Thank's Natalie and JP for you insightful responses to my blog. I know, everything is always easier said then done. However, I am one of those odd people whom would rather work for less, doing something I love and fill passionate about; rather than be wealthy, hating my job and myself. And believe me I am sincere in the words that I choose.

In the past I have considered becoming a teacher and/or a marine biologist, for I have always been interested in teaching and in social and environmental studies. So, why marketing? Because through marketing I believe that I can help develop the voice. Therefore, I am extremely interested in working for a NPO.

Now, consider the direction the USA and our society is going, well I believe the majority of companies today are shifting into becoming sustainable. We are living in a time where we can grow, see the advantages before us, and become that which we want to be. Money may be the root of all evil, but we are the ones driving the fast car going somewhere. And I do believe where we go in our life and career is our choice.

    Best wishes always.
